Distance learning programs are designed to help ESL teachers complete and receive TESOL training and certificates, but participants should choose wisely and avoid scams.

Teaching ESL abroad is rapidly becoming the ideal job for those who love to travel and meet new people. In many countries, it is possible to obtain a teaching position with a bachelor's degree in any field. However, certification through TESOL courses gives many teachers an edge, opening the doors to higher salaries, more jobs, and greater opportunities.

Many countries offer TESOL courses, which range from intensive to part-time. These are great options for some, but not everyone can afford to leave home and work and dedicate months to receiving TESOL certification. Receiving training online is a great option, but like anything else, there are many scams out there. Here are a few tips on getting a TESOL, TESL, or TEFL certificate from a reputable program online.

TESOL Certification Online: Research First

It's important to understand the types of ESL certification available. TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is more common in the U.S. than TEFL, and is seen as more politically correct. TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification is typically aimed at those teaching students abroad, in their native country. The TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) certificate is more focused on how to teach immigrants that live in English-speaking countries.

Before making the decision to pursue a certificate, potential teachers should take advantage of online communities to learn as much as possible. The TESOL website is a great place for ESL teachers to meet and chat with others, as well as to browse helpful articles and tips.

Finding the Right Distance Learning Course for ESL Certification

One can find an overwhelming number of online TESOL courses available, but not all are created equal. The first rule to remember is that no worthwhile certificate will be free. ESL certification is taken very seriously, and good courses with quality training will charge accordingly.

An online practice test is a good way to test the waters. Many websites have previous TESOL and TEFL tests from years past available for students to download and use as practice.

Certification is more than just a piece of paper. Teachers should be sure that they agree with the curriculum before they write a check for the course.

Before signing on with any distance learning course, it's advisable to find a good, reputable forum with experienced ESL teachers, like Dave's ESL Cafe, where teachers can receive guidance and advice from those who have completed the course.
